Introduction
Choosing a career in hospitality and tourism is a decision that many young people face with enthusiasm and expectations. What motivates students to choose this field? Is it the passion for service, family influence, the prestige of the industry, or economic opportunities? This article explores these factors through a narrative that invites readers to reflect on their own experiences and decisions.

Vocation and Passion
Imagine Laura, a young woman who has always enjoyed organizing events and making people feel good. Since childhood, she dreamed of working in a luxury hotel or a travel agency. For Laura, vocation is a powerful driving force. According to García and López (2020), many young people choose careers they are passionate about and in which they feel they can excel. In the hospitality and tourism sector, a passion for service and hospitality is essential. Have you ever wondered what your true vocation is? What are you so passionate about that you could dedicate your life to it?

Family Influence
Now, let’s think about Miguel, whose father is a hotel manager and whose mother is a chef at a renowned restaurant. Since childhood, Miguel has been surrounded by conversations about the hospitality industry. Family influence is undeniable. Bravo and Vergara (2018) found that young people highly value the opinions and support of their parents and family members. In Miguel’s case, family not only influences his decision but also gives him an insider’s view of the industry. How much do your parents and family influence your decisions? Do you feel pressured to follow a specific career path to meet their expectations?

Prestige and Social Utility
Consider Ana, who has always admired hospitality professionals for their ability to create memorable experiences for guests. For her, social prestige and the usefulness of the profession are key factors. García and López (2020) point out that many young people choose careers that are socially valued. Additionally, Ríos (2015) highlights that the possibility of contributing positively to society is a significant motivator. In the hospitality and tourism sector, the prestige of working in renowned hotels or popular tourist destinations can be very attractive. How important is the prestige of a profession to you? Are you motivated by the idea of making a difference in society?

Economic Factors
Finally, let’s think about Carlos, who comes from a low-income family. For him, future economic stability is crucial. Bravo and Vergara (2018) found that job opportunities and salary prospects are determining factors in career choice. In the hospitality and tourism industry, growth opportunities and salary prospects can be very attractive. Does economic stability concern you when choosing a career? How do job prospects influence your decision?

Current Context: Economic Impact and Workforce Shortage
In today’s world, tourism remains a crucial economic engine. In 2024, global tourism is expected to generate an impact of $11 trillion on global GDP (WTTC, 2024). However, despite this growth, the sector faces a human resources crisis. A shortage of qualified personnel, a lack of appeal for the profession, and high turnover are issues affecting the industry (Hosteltur, 2024; Dirigentes Digital, 2024). Why is there a growing disinterest among young people in studying tourism and hospitality? Is the quality of life in the sector inadequate? Or do we need to revalue this profession?

Disinterest in Tourism and Hospitality Studies
Currently, there is a noticeable decline in young people’s vocational interest in careers in tourism and hospitality. Despite the growing economic activity, many young people do not see these careers as attractive options (Diario de Emprendedores, 2024; Les Roches, 2024). What factors are contributing to this disinterest? Is the perception of quality of life in the sector a trigger for this disinterest? Or do we need a collective effort to revalue this profession?

Reflection and Action
It is crucial to ask ourselves and question fundamental issues about the quality of life of people working in the hospitality and tourism sector. Who should act to change this situation? Is it academics, employers, or both? Collaboration between educational institutions and the industry is essential to improve the perception and working conditions in the sector. How can we make careers in hospitality and tourism more attractive to young people? What changes are necessary to ensure a better quality of life for professionals in the sector?

Conclusion
The choice of a career in hospitality and tourism is a personal and unique journey, influenced by a combination of vocational, family, social, and economic factors. Each of us has a different story, but we all share the search for a career that satisfies us and allows us to achieve our goals. What factors have most influenced your career choice? How do you see yourself professionally in the future?
